Passing Shapes
Setup: Staggered lines, arm's-width apart, one direction down the mat.
How it works: Lengths, twice each, all of them tonight's footwork in disguise: bear crawls low and wide, lateral lunges down the mat, back-steps — plant the lead foot and swing the trailing leg long behind — and knee-cut slides: one knee skimming the mat across an imaginary thigh, trailing foot driving. Finish with two minutes of partner hip-switch flow on the floor: one holds loose seated guard, the other switches hips side to side around the knees at conversation pace.
What to say
- “Back-steps: the trailing leg travels long and low — a short back-step is just a stumble.”
- “Knee-cut slides: the cutting knee stays connected to the floor the whole way across.”
- “In hip-switch flow, your head stays over your hips — leaning arrives before falling does.”
Easier
Half-lengths, no partner flow — spend the time on slow back-steps.
Harder
Hip-switch flow becomes continuous around the whole guard, both directions, no hands on the mat.
