Mat Movements & Pairing Up
Setup: Staggered lines, arm's-width apart, one direction. Pair by size for the partner work and say why out loud: matched pairs mean everyone drills honestly, and rotations happen by invitation — anyone may stay with a partner they trust.
How it works: Lengths, twice each: shrimps, bridges with a reach over the shoulder, technical stand-ups, and sit-up swings — the guard sit-up done fast enough that the shoulders leave the mat with intent, because that swing is tonight's engine. Finish with one minute of partner posture play: one sits in closed guard, the other kneels tall, and they simply feel posture built and broken at conversation pace, swapping halfway. New faces get a coach or an experienced partner for their first night — the first roll shapes the first month.
What to say
- “Sit-up swings: shoulders commit, hips follow — rehearse the explosion slow.”
- “Technical stand-ups finish in a stance, not a stumble — base is the habit.”
- “Check in before adding resistance — a two-word question builds a ten-year training partner.”
Easier
Half-lengths; sit-up swings to one elbow instead of the full sit.
Harder
Sit-up swings with a two-second hold at the top; posture play at quarter resistance.
