Grading Day Pretend

Setup: Spot markers in test-day formation — straight lines, facing the front. Bow in formally, slower than usual. Tonight the whole class is a dress rehearsal, and the warm-up starts the acting.

How it works: Explain the game in one line: we are practising test day until it feels like just another class. Warm up in test formation with follow-along basics — running on the spot, jumping jacks, stance switches — but with grading manners: start each exercise on the formal command your art uses, finish frozen, wait for the next command. Sprinkle in two false starts on purpose and praise the kids who waited. Finish with one minute of the wriggles: shake everything loose, because test-day bodies need to know how to relax too.

Rounds: Keep the formal commands running all class — by the real grading they'll be furniture.

The Judge's Table

Setup: Two cones make a presentation spot at the front. Class sits in test-day lines. You sit behind them with the clipboard — visibly writing nothing important, but writing.

How it works: Kids come up two at a time to the presentation spot and perform three of any syllabus move they choose — their best three, announced first in a big voice: name, then move. The seated class is the other half of the drill: sitting tall, silent while classmates perform, one single clap together when each pair bows off. Score out loud with only ever three words, all confidence-shaped: strong voice, still feet, brave finish. Every child goes up twice; the second visit is always braver, and telling them why closes the round.

Rounds: 2 visits each · pairs up, class claps once · scores are always three kind words

What to say

“Big voice first — a loud name makes the moves braver.”
“The audience is training too: sitting like a black belt is tonight's hardest move.”
“Nobody up there is being caught out — the judge's table is where we show off.”

Easier

Go up in threes with a friend either side; whisper the name and let the class echo it big.

Harder

Perform to the clipboard alone, no partner; add a fourth move called by the judge on the spot.

The Wobble Game

Setup: Everyone on their spot in lines. This block teaches the single most useful grading skill there is: what to do when you go wrong.

How it works: Teach the reset ritual first, all together: freeze, one slow breath in and out, back to your stance, carry on — four beats, count them aloud. Then play the game: the class performs a simple sequence from your syllabus over and over, and you call WOBBLE at random moments. On WOBBLE, everyone pretends to lose their place as dramatically as they dare — then does the reset ritual and carries on perfectly. Mistakes become a game they have rehearsed, not a cliff they fall off. Last two runs: no WOBBLE calls, but anyone who genuinely stumbles gets to show off the ritual for real, and gets the loudest single clap of the night for it.

Easier

Shorter sequence; WOBBLE calls announced with a big wind-up so nobody is startled.

Harder

WOBBLE only for one named row at a time — the rest must keep going without watching.
