Bow In & The Volume Dial
Setup: Bow in on spots, then stay in the grid. Tonight's opening line, delivered like a secret: a big voice makes a brave body — so we train the voice first.
How it works: Teach the kiai as a dial from one to five: one is a whisper-shout with fierce eyes, three is a classroom-proud shout, five rattles the windows. Warm up the bodies with jacks, fast feet and stance switches, and between each burst, kiai practice at the number you hold up on your fingers. Then echo battles: split the room in half, one side kiais at a number, the other side must beat it by exactly one — control going up matters as much as volume. Finish all together: three… four… FIVE, with a stance snap on the last one.
Rounds: Six or seven dial rounds woven between exercise bursts — every voice in the room gets fifty reps before anyone performs alone.
What to say
- “Fierce eyes at every volume — 'a level-one kiai with tiger eyes beats a screech with scared ones.'”
- “The dial cuts both ways: coming DOWN from five to two on command is the control they'll need all night.”
- “Find the quiet kids' threes before you ask for fives — meet every voice where it lives.”
Easier
Whole-class kiais only, never rows or solos; the dial stops at three.
Harder
Rows kiai in sequence like a wave, each row one number louder, ending in a whole-class five.
