Bow In & Syllabus Says

Setup: Bow in on spots in grading lines — the same lines the test will use, because familiar furniture calms nerves all by itself. Your syllabus sheet in hand.

How it works: Coach-says, but every call is a syllabus item for the belts in the room: 'coach says fighting stance… coach says rising block… low kick.' Anyone caught without the magic words does two frog jumps and rejoins — nobody sits out on grading week of all weeks. Speed up as they sharpen. Finish with one silent round: you MOUTH the technique name with no sound, and they read your lips — total eyes-on-coach, which is exactly the habit examiners reward.

Rounds: Five or six quick rounds — the whole basic syllabus gets touched before the circuit even starts.

What to say

  • Only call what is on their syllabus — every rep tonight must be a rep that counts on the day.
  • Mixed belts? Call by group: 'white belts, your stance — yellow belts, your block.'
  • The lip-reading round is the sleeper hit: eyes locked on the coach is half of grading well.

Easier

Slow calls with a demo of each; drop the catch-outs for the youngest.

Harder

Chain two syllabus items per call, and let a senior kid take the caller's job for a round.
